Christoph Mall participated at the 2nd International Workshop for the Center for the Assessment of Physical Activity (CAPA) held on the 11th and 12th July 2019 at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany. The CAPA Workshop resulted in an expert consensus on the topic of accelerometry for physical behavior assessment, recently published in Psychology of Sport and Exercise.
The authors share a variety of expertise in research regarding monitoring devices, accelerometry, physical behavior and public health.
The expert consensus summarizes the current state of science on
- how the full spectrum of physical behaviors can be assessed,
- preferred study designs and metrics applied in respect to different research goals,
- important implications for data collection and processing,
- and current developments in statistical analysis.
A special emphasis is given on 24-h recordings of physical behaviors whenever possible, the need for better validation studies, future developments of smart devices and the combination of accelerometry with other measures such as GPS, heart rate, heart rate variability, and ambulatory assessment.
