Prof. Dr. Jürgen Beckmann, head of the former Chair of Sport Psychology, will be a new member of the TUM Emeriti of Excellence this year.
Since 2006, the TU Munich has been awarding the honorary title of TUM Emeritus of Excellence to outstanding and committed retired scientists who can be expected to continue to show a high level of commitment, and integrating them into the university's tasks. This includes participation in the establishment and consolidation of research facilities as well as mentoring talented students, doctoral candidates and young scientists. In addition, the TUM Emeriti of Excellence are heard by the university presidium as competent, independent advisors on strategically important issues and promote the internationalization of the university through their worldwide contacts.
"This is, of course, a very nice recognition for my work and everything I have invested in the faculty over the years," said Prof. Beckmann. "I know that the TUM president appreciates, among other things, my excellent international connections. Among other things, I am an honorary professor at the University of Queensland in Australia, and the president wants me to continue to be involved here. Of course, the honorary title is also associated with other tasks, including serving as a mentor in doctoral procedures or helping with appointments, as well as writing new ethical guidelines and regulations for good scientific work."
Through their personal responsibility for initiatives and programs, the TUM Emeriti of Excellence contribute to the promotion of young scientists and to relieving the burden on younger professors. With this project, the TU Munich is also making a contribution to promoting solidarity between the generations.
Admissions to the select circle are made once a year according to the criteria of scientific excellence in research and teaching, commitment to the development of the Technical University of Munich, presence in public life, and sustainable networks. Candidate proposals are reviewed by a commission and submitted to the President for decision.
In addition to Prof. Beckmann, Prof. Dr. Helmut Krcmar (Faculty of Computer Science), Prof. Dr. Ernst Rank (School of Engineering and Design), Prof. Dr. Kristina Reiss (School of Social Sciences and Technology), and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Wagner (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology) will also be included in the TUM Emeriti of Excellence this year.
The announcement was made at the meeting of the extended university presidium in Raitenhaslach at the beginning of October by Prof. Dr. Michael Molls, spokesman for the circle of TUM Emeriti of Excellence. The presentation of the certificates of appointment by President Thomas F. Hofmann will take place during the General Assembly on December 13, 2021.
