On Wednesday, July 1st, the Department of Media and Communication and the Chair of Preventive Pediatrics organised an online seminar for the research project “Knowledge and attitudes on doping among sports journalists in Germany” (WEDoSport). The project was funded by the Federal Institute for Sports Science (BISp) and supported by the National Anti-Doping Agency Germany (NADA) and the Association of German Sports Journalists (VDS).
Prof. Dr. Michael Schaffrath, Head of the Department of Media and Communication, presented findings on the topic “Knowledge deficits among sports journalists on the subject of doping”. Nils Olson, Research Associate at the Chair of Preventive Paediatrics, addressed “Sports journalists' attitudes to reporting of suspected doping cases”. Dr. Thorsten Schulz, Research Associate at the Chair of Preventive Pediatrics, spoke about "Doping in leisure and popular sports from the perspective of sports journalists". This was followed by Johanna Schmickler, Research Associate at the Department of Media and Communication, who gave a brief overview of the research project “Trainers and Media: Analysis of the perception and evaluation of doping reporting and the effects on training work” (TuMDoBe), which has been running since March this year and is also funded by the BISp. This new study is also supported by the NADA and the Trainer Academy Cologne of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB).
The audience and subsequent contributors to the discussion included Dr. Marc Wonneberger, Head of the Anti-Doping Unit at the BISp's Research and Development Department, Eva Bunthoff, Head of NADA's Communications and Marketing Department, Prof. Dr. Lutz Nordmann, Director of the Trainer Academy Cologne and Chairman of NADA's Prevention Commission, and Erich Laaser, President of the VDS. The ARD doping expert and contributor to the research project “WEDoSport” in the context of qualitative guideline interviews, Hajo Seppelt, also took part in the online seminar and subsequent discussion rounds.
