The Chair for Conservative and Rehabilitative Orthopedics headed by Prof. Dr. Thomas Horstmann is organizing the “CONNECT 2021 - Connective Tissues in Sports Medicine” congress from 26-27 March 2021. The event, which has been held twice in Ulm so far in 2013 and 2017, will take place at the Audimax of the Technical University of Munich for the first time. The congress is being organized in cooperation with the “Fascia Research Group” lead by Dr. Robert Schleip and the Department of Sports and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University Hospital Ulm under the direction of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Jürgen M. Steinacker.
“The 3rd CONNECT Congress at the TUM will focus on research across a range of biological areas and will also feature the theme 'Connective Tissue in Sports Medicine'. New research results on the role of the fascia from a clinical, molecular, and biomechanical point of view will be examined in order to strengthen exchanges and dialogue between all research areas,” Prof. Horstmann explains the main topics of the conference.
“The aim of the congress is to bring together scientists, sports medicine specialists, doctors, therapists, trainers and sports administrators in order to implement the latest scientific findings in sports and therapeutic practice,” adds Dr. Robert Schleip, who works as a research assistant at the Chair for Conservative and Rehabilitative Orthopedics. Schleip is a human biologist and psychologist specializing in fascia research. He has been the Director of the “Fascia Research Group” at the University of Ulm since 2008, which plays a leading role in fascia research worldwide.
A total of 14 nationally and internationally leading researchers from the multidisciplinary field of fascia research have been recruited as keynote speakers for the congress, including Prof. Irene Davis from Harvard Medical School (USA) and Prof. Paul Hodges from the University of Queensland (Australia).
The program foresees six plenary sessions on “The evolutionary and functional aspects of muscular connective tissue”, “The adaptation of muscular connective tissue to movement/training stimulation” and “The influence of age, sex and nutrition” on 26 March, and “Cytokines and inflammatory aspects”, “Muscular connective tissue injury” and “The effect of therapy/training interventions on sports-related myofascial pathologies” on 27 March. Workshops are also planned both before and after the congress (25/28 March).
Interested participants can register now via the congress homepage. An “Early Bird” rate will apply until the end of November 2020. The registration fee is currently €390 (instead of €440). Students are entitled to a reduced participation fee of €90 for both event days. Furthermore, it is also possible to only participate in individual days or workshops. Abstracts can be submitted until 15 October 2020.
