Exercise triggers adaptations because exercise-associated signals trigger molecular events that change cells. A major goal of the Exercise Biology team (Prof. Henning Wackerhage, Dr. Martin Schönfelder) at the TU of Munich is to discover new mechanisms of adaptation that are relevant to performance and health. To achieve this we collaborate with international groups and Munich-based research groups. This strategy is supported by the Technical University of Munich through providing funds for hosting an annual meeting at the TUM Science and Study Center Raitenhaslach, a former monastery near the river Salzach in the southeast of Bavaria.
On April 21st-22nd 2017, we organized our second international meeting on Hippo, muscle & exercise, funded by the TUM Incentive Fund. The speakers included zebrafish researchers (Prof. Brian Link and Eric Clark, Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Bettina Schmid, DZNE Munich Großhadern, Dr. Julian Mehl, TUM, Klinikum Rechts der Isar), biochemists (Dr. Arno Alpi, Max Planck Institute Munich Großhadern, Dr. Carsten Hansen, University of Edinburgh, Dr. Abdalla Mohamed, University of Aberdeen), muscle biologists (Prof. Pete Zammit, King’s College London) and exercise physiologists (Prof. Steve Harridge, King’s College London, Dr. Brendan Gabriel, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Dr. Sebastian Gehlert, Deutsche Sporthochschule Köln).
On Friday and Saturday delegates presented 30 min talks on their research in relation to the topic of the meeting. As exercise biologists we also organized two opportunities for a “science talk” run or walk. For our group the main outcomes are to a) network with researchers who use methods that we use or plan to use, to b) see how leading groups experimentally address research questions that are relevant to us and to c) get a feeling for the standard of research in related life sciences. From our perspective the size of the group, length of the talks and the venue worked very well. Raitenhaslach is the perfect scientific meeting place and our planning was made easy by the superb Raitenhaslach team led by Mrs Weiant.
