As of 10/1/2023, the Chair of Sports Biology is pursuing a new research strategy. Our main goal as a team is cutting-edge research on metabolism and sport often in the context of metabolic diseases. After establishing the Professorship of Exercise Physiology, we initially conducted opportunistic research on many topics. In this research, metabolic projects were particularly successful and, moreover, Munich is a global center for modern metabolic research. Our goal is therefore to develop ourselves into a leading, methodologically strong research group in modern metabolic research in sports.
Our new mission statement for our research is:
- Our research area within molecular sports physiology is metabolic sports research in humans and in cells often in the context of metabolic diseases.
- We collaborate primarily with research groups that specialize in state-of-the-art metabolomics methods, such as arteriovenous metabolomics and stable isotope metabolic flux analyses.
- Our goal is mechanistic discovery research rather than applied or confirmatory research.
Sports Biology also now has a new logo that symbolizes our new strategy: The logo shows a metabolite (blue dot) in a cell (circle) being exchanged with the environment (arrows). We did not try to symbolize sports, otherwise the logo would be overloaded and since "Exercise Biology".
