As part of the graduation ceremony for police mountain and ski guides, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann visited the TUM Campus in the Olympic Park on Saturday, February 11, 2023.
In total, one female police officer and 14 male police officers completed the extensive training, which extended over four years due to the Corona pandemic. Eleven police officers are now reinforcing the Alpine Task Force of the Bavarian Police, three come from the Federal Police and one mountain guide is a member of the Swiss Police from the Canton of St. Gallen.
Together with Ulf Strandt, President of the Federal Police Academy, and Colonel Dr. Bruno Zanger, Commander of the Cantonal Police of St. Gallen, Interior Minister Herrmann, who is also Bavarian Minister of Sport, presented the new police mountain and ski guides with their certificates in the climbing hall at the TUM Campus in the Olympic Park. Helmut Weidel, chairman of the Association of German Police Mountain and Ski Guides, had asked the Department SG about the indoor climbing facility as a venue for the graduation ceremony, which provided a great backdrop for the award ceremony.
"Since we offer training for state-certified mountain and ski guides at our Department on behalf of the Bavarian state government, the point of contact was of course quickly found," explained training manager Gudrun Weikert from the Applied Sports Science Unit. "The police mountain and ski guides who have been trained would now theoretically have the opportunity to complete civilian training with us as well."
For Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, it was the first visit to the new TUM campus in the Olympic Park, which has been in operation since October 2021 and was officially inaugurated in May 2022. "The new campus is a wonderful location," expressed the Minister of the Interior in conversation with Dr. Till Lorenzen, Managing Director of the Department of Sport and Health Sciences. "Particularly impressive are the diverse offerings in inclusion and rehabilitation, as well as the research opportunities available in the new building."
"When we received the request for this event from the Ministry of the Interior, we were of course very happy to comply," Dr. Lorenzen explained. "It's great that the many opportunities at our new Campus are being used by all stakeholders in Bavaria. Of course, this also speaks for the quality of the facilities we have here. Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann and also all the other guests were totally surprised and excited about the size of the new building complex."
Due to subsequent appointment commitments, Minister of the Interior and Sports Herrmann was unable to take a tour of the campus that had been offered. "But he deliberately expressed the wish to come back and then take an intensive look at the campus," said Dr. Lorenzen.
