"Incidence, mortality and survival of penile cancer in Saxony" - the Chair of Epidemiology of Prof. Dr. Stefanie J. Klug has published a study on this topic in the journal "Urologic Oncology: Seminars and Original Investigations". The journal is the official journal of the Society of Urologic Oncology and has an impact factor of 3.397.
As part of a study, Prof. Klug's team investigated how penile cancer developed in Saxony between 1961 and 2012. For the study, the chair cooperated with the University Hospital of the TU Dresden, the University of Leipzig, established urologists as well as the Joint Cancer Registry of the East German Federal States in Berlin. "Penile cancer is a very rare type of cancer for which only relatively few data and studies are available," explains the habilitated epidemiologist. "We were able to compare cancer data from the time of the GDR with current developments," explains Klug.
"The analysis has shown that in Saxony the incidence of penile cancer has increased overall, from 1.2 per 100,000 to 1.8. Statistically significant is the increase between 2003 and 2012. However, mortality has decreased," says Klug. 72.4 percent of those affected survive the diagnosis for at least five years. The chance of survival depends on the stage of the diagnosis. "The earlier the cancer is diagnosed, the higher the chance of survival," says Klug.
