Honours for Steffen Lang (Research Associate) and Yuesen Li (PhD student) of the Chair of Performance Analysis and Sports Informatics. Both were honoured for their PhD theses at various specialist conferences with prizes for young researchers. Prof. Dr. Daniel Link, supervisor of the two PhD projects, is delighted with the awards: "Both PhD students have produced outstanding work. I am pleased that the scientific community has recognised this."
Steffen Lang was honoured at the 28th Annual Conference of the dvs Football Commission in Frankfurt for the presentation of his doctoral project on "Prediction of match events during a football match using machine learning methods," winning the young talent award of the same name. "I am delighted that my project has been honoured and recognized. In my work, I am looking at the importance of existing performance indicators in football and their significance for the current performance of both teams. I want to find out which indicator best reflects the current performance of the teams or the momentum", says Lang about the game analysis approaches he has developed.
Yuesen Li took second place in the “Dartfish-Jürgen Perl Young Scientist Award” at the International Association of Computer Science in Sport (IACSS) for the 14th International Symposium on Computer Science in Sport in Hangzhou, China. As part of his PhD topic "Using Machine Learning for identifying soccer in-possession match phases based on their tactical intention," Li developed a novel knowledge-based phase model that takes tactical Intentions into account.
A thematic and meaningful segmentation for ball possession is an essential aspect of soccer analytics: "My research contributes to the advancement of sports informatics and soccer analytics by providing a comprehensive and detailed approach to identifying match phases based on tactical intentions. The combination of a knowledge-driven phase model and machine learning techniques demonstrates the potential for practical application and opens new avenues for understanding and characterizing team performances," explains Li.
