The Chair of Epidemiology invites you to attend a symposium at the TUM Science & Study Center Raitenhaslach on the topic of "Physical Activity & Prevention" to be held from March 21 to 22. Renowned international experts could be won as keynote speakers. On January 16, the detailed congress program was presented. Registration for the symposium will be possible until January 31. No fees will be charged for attending the congress.
Cross-linking and discussion of future research projects
"A goal of the symposium is to provide a view of the research situation for physical activity - that is physical activity, movement and sport - as well as on prevention. We want to bring the world-wide experts together for this, in order to form a mutual network for jointly identifying and initiating new research projects," explains Prof. Dr. Stefanie Klug, a full professor at the Chair of Epidemiology. The effects of movement and sport on health have already been examined in numerous research projects.
However, the significance of this information is subject to restrictions. "Generally only small and very selective samples have been examined. In addition, the samples generated only represent an actual random sampling procedure from a population in very few cases," explains Prof. Klug. With regard to the period observed these usually only involve short periods of time.
"A long-term investigation of a random sample from a normal population with purposeful interventions is lacking thus far," says the habilitated epidemiologist. Only on the basis of such an interventional study can reliable statements be made regarding the long-term influence of physical activity on preventing cardiovascular illnesses and cancer.
Four sessions each with two keynote lectures
In Raitenhaslach, this topic will be investigated from different perspectives in four sessions each with two keynote lectures. Hereby, Prof. Christine Friedenreich (University of Calgary) and Prof. Rebecca Hardy (University College London) will lecture on "International intervention studies on chronic diseases". Prof. Piet van der Brandt (Maastricht University) and Prof. Marcus Dörr (Greifswald University) will speak on "Cohort studies on chronic diseases and physical activity". Further topics are "Monitoring life style behavior - Measuring physical activity and diet" (Dr. Jonas Finger - Robert Koch Institute and Dr. Vincent van Hees - eScience Center of the Netherlands) and "What makes people active?" (Prof. Corneel Vandelanotte - Central Queensland University and Prof. Jasper Schipperijn - University of Southern Denmark).
