The Chair of Sport and Health Education is carrying out a new third-party funded project. For "genEffects", the team of Prof. Dr. Yolanda Demetriou is cooperating with the Heidelberg University of Education (Prof. Jens Bucksch) as well as the Technical University of Chemnitz (Prof. Dr. Anne Kerstin Reimers). Until 2020, "genEffects" will be sponsored to a full amount of 470,000 euros by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).
Differences between boys and girl regarding their movement and sitting behavior
"For the Chair, this highly endowed project is a great success. I look forward to the cooperation with Prof. Reimers and Prof. Bucksch, and to the work in the course of the funding initiative 'Healthy - a Life Long'", says Professor Demetriou. For "genEffects", the differences between girls and boys are regarded concerning their movement and sitting behavior. "We know that the two sexes differ with regard to their reaction and acceptance of different offers which are supposed to lead to an increase in the frequency of movement," explains Prof. Demetriou. However: Which measures are better accepted by which sex? And how should offers be designed, so that girls and boys both profit optimally from this support? These and further questions are to be answered by the research group.
Systematic review
For this purpose, a checklist is first developed to evaluate the gender sensitivity of interventional studies for promoting movement and reducing the sitting times in children and adolescents (6-19 years). Subsequently, already existing interventions are analyzed by means of the provided checklist in the course of a systematic review.
External know-how for this is supplied by the "Cochrane sex/Gender Methods Group". "The organization supports us in the development of the checklist for evaluating the gender sensitivity of interventional studies. Aside from that, the colleagues act as advisors at our side for production of the systematic reviews. After all, the researchers of this society had introduced and shaped this method," explains Demetriou. The so-called Cochrane reviews are systematic overviews, which summarize the results of research on questions of health care and health-care policies. These systematics are valid in international health research as a central standard of quality.
