The relevance of the Munich sport context to students’ experience
The trip kickstarted with a weekend of exploring the sites of Munich and watching the FC Bayern München beat Greuther Fürth 4 to 1 at football. Bright and early Monday morning the students were welcomed with a tour of the Olympic Park and the new TUM campus which hosts the Department of Sport and Health Sciences. Following an introductory course, the students learned about leadership and positioning within the sport, tourism and recreation industry. The following day, students engaged in strategic planning and enjoyed a seminar from Professor Joerg Koenigstorfer on controversy, leading, and planning of mega sport events.
Meeting for-profit and not-for-profit organizations in the greater Munich area
Next, students took the train to Schliersee, an hour south of Munich. Here they had a tour of the club facilities at TSV Schliersee and a meeting with Dr Otto Kolbinger and the club president Hubert Strobl. Together they enjoyed a traditional Bavarian lunch. In their Thursday morning seminar, the students had a group role play activity titled ‘Who calls the shots in global mega sport event decision making?’ and spent the afternoon competing in a friendly volleyball competition at the TUM sports facilities. On their final day at TUM the students spent the morning in online meetings with four different Munich-based sport organizations interviewing key staff and learning about the leadership of these organizations. This was followed by an engaging ethics workshop in the afternoon.
From Munich to Innsbruck
After a great week of leadership workshops, teambuilding exercises and exploring the Bavarian culture, the students headed to Austria (Chair of Sport Management at University of Innsbruck) to start the next part of the leadership program and continue their European experience. The students will meet the doctoral candidates of the Chair of Sport and Health Management in Innsbruck, where a sport management conference takes place on February 3, 2022.
