Both Prof. Swart and Prof. Bocarro held a keynote speech, and presented their latest research results in the fields of "The Legacy of Mega-Sporting Events" and "Physical Activity as a Preventive Measure." The program was vitalized by numerous recreational activities in the morning that took place in magnificent weather conditions. While the rest of the participants of the Winter School left for Munich Thursday morning, the CARNIVAL partners held an additional workshop on the legacy of mega sporting events. Here, the main focus was on the discussion of studies on the impact of the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, and potential future projects and possibilities for PhD students from all universities.
At the end of their stay on Friday, the guests were invited to the Olympic Park Company in Munich, in particularly by press spokesman Tobias Kohler. Mr. Kohler disclosed the design and strategic development of the Olympic Park to the visitors and elaborated on the current use of the park area as a venue location. The presentation ended in a discussion about the possibilities and difficulties that go along with large sporting facilities, as well as how these can be fostered and avoided respectively beforehand.
The CARNIVAL project is EU-funded and focuses on the legacy of mega-sporting events. In addition to the Department of Sport & Health Management, North Carolina State University (Raleigh, United States), Cape Peninsula University of Technology (Cape Town, South Africa), Coventry University (Coventry, England), and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) are involved in the project.
