The NRA of the European Association for Sport Management
The award is the most prestigious award in the area of sport management in Europe. It is sponsored by Routledge and the European Sport Management Quarterly. The award was given to the best contribution of PhD candidates or postdocs that graduated less than three years prior to submission. The prize is established to stimulate dissemination of new ideas and innovative research in sport management by encouraging new researchers at the start of their career. In 2015, after two highly competitive review rounds, three candidates were selected to present their work during the 23rd EASM: Felix Wemmer (TUM), Wojtek Kulcyzcki (TUM), and Joon Sung Lee (University of Michigan).
TUM PhD student presentations were ranked highest
Felix Wemmer who won the price presented his paper entitled "Performance Impact of Coopetition-based Open Innovation in Nonprofit Sports Clubs.“ The paper is co-authored by Eike Emrich (Saarland University) and Jörg Königstorfer (TUM). In his work, Felix showed that nonprofit sports clubs can increase their organizational performance via adopting a coopetition-based framework. The framework allows the inflow and outflow of knowledge in order to innovate. Thus, the work helps sports clubs successfully compete with for-profit organizations, such as fitness and health companies. Wojtek Kulczycki who was ranked 2nd (together with Joon Sung Lee) presented his paper entitled "Why Sponsors Should Worry about Corruption as a Mega Sport Event Syndrome.“ His work showed that corruption is a great concern to mega-event sponsors because it lowers the host population’s attitudes. This is true for both the country-level corruption (in a host country) and the organizing body-level corruption (e.g., IOC and FIFA). Corruption leads to indirect negative effects on attitude to sponsorship, and corporate social responsibility implemented by stakeholders only partly reduces this negative effect. Thus, his work calls for higher monitoring efforts to reduce the likelihood of corrupt behaviors in sport organizations (and on the host country level).
Positive feedback from the chair
Professor Königstorfer, Chair of Sport & Health Management, is very proud of both Felix and Wojtek: "This is an acknowledgement for the two and their great work. I particularly liked the contribution of the studies to managing sports in practice. Felix gave very good implications to managers in sports clubs. Wojtek gave some very good advice to practitioners who are organizing events and who are involved in fighting corruption,“ Jörg Königstorfer says. Both papers are under further review in the European Sport Management Quarterly. Jörg Königstorfer also likes that the topics are innovative: "These are the first studies in their area, indicating that state-of-the art management knowledge is needed to increase our understanding in sport management.“ The chair and the team congratulate both Felix Wemmer and Wojtek Kulczycki for their successful participation at EASM Conference.
