The Austrian Green Planet Building (AGPB) Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of Austrian companies abroad in the field of "sustainable building". The focus is on efficiency and the supply of renewable energy. AGPB is an initiative of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology and the foreign trade organization of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber "Advantage Austria" and transfers the criteria of the national climate protection initiative "klimaaktiv" for the construction and real estate industry to the international environment.
At the award ceremony in September 2023, the TUM Campus im Olympiapark (TUM CiO) received the AGPB Award. Now Dr. Till Lorenzen, Managing Director of the TUM School of Medicine and Health, and Isabel Thömmes, Real Estate Management ZA1, received the official plaque from the hands of Consul for Commercial Affairs Andreas Haidenthaler and Innovation Officer Franz Nickl from the Commercial Department of the Austrian Consulate General in Munich at a meeting at TUM CiO.
In its statement, the jury particularly praised the light, freshness and spaciousness of the two-storey wooden building in the listed Olympic Park, which was designed by Dietrich Untertrifaller Architekten (Bregenz and Vienna). The fact that the campus uses the local groundwater as a source of heating and cooling in addition to district heating and that the ventilation system with heat recovery is used as part of an energy-efficient building technology was also highlighted. According to the jury, another highlight is the striking 18-metre cantilevered canopy, which was made by Rubner Ingenieurholzbau (Munich) and is a special timber construction made of prefabricated parts. This allows measurements to be taken on the underlying part of the sports track regardless of the weather. In addition, the high degree of prefabrication enabled a short assembly time during ongoing operations.
"The AGPB Award recognizes particularly sustainable, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly buildings that are realized with the significant involvement of Austrian architects, planners, construction companies or even technology suppliers outside of Austria," explains Haidenthaler. "What we find particularly exciting here at the TUM Campus in the Olympic Park is that we are located on an area that has been used for over 50 years since the 1972 Olympic Games. We are delighted that Austrian architects and building services partners were involved in the construction of the new TUM CiO. I think this is a wonderful example of sustainable and environmentally conscious economic cooperation between Germany, Bavaria and Austria."
"We are of course delighted and honored that our TUM Campus in the Olympic Park has received the prestigious Austrian Green Planet Building Award. The AGPB Award plaque will be given a place of honor on the campus," says Dr. Lorenzen. "This Award shows once again how innovative and sustainable the new building was designed from the outset and then implemented. The collaboration with Dietrich Untertrifaller Architekten, who won the realization competition in 2015, was and continues to be characterized by great trust. We look forward to finally being able to move into a building that will serve as a model of sustainability for the coming decades, including the office areas, when the third construction phase is completed in 2025."
