Get fit in only ten weeks in order to complete a ten-kilometer run. This is the goal of the action "Run10!". In 2008, the project was initiated by the "Abendschau" of the Bavarian Broadcasting Network. In the meantime, "Run10" is one of the largest popular sporting events Bavaria. In the last year around 40,000 runners participated, 5000 took part in the final run in Wolnzach.
Run10: Movement for all
On April 20, Run10! 2015 began. Also this time, participating as a representative is Prof. Dr. Martin Halle, Vice dean of the Faculty for Sport and Health Sciences and Full Professor at the Chair for Preventative and Rehabilitative Sport Medicine. "The special feature of Run10! is its large bandwidth. Everyone can participate, regardless of whether he/she is overweight, has a high blood pressure or, under certain circumstances, even if they have a serious illness", explains Prof. Halle.
Training plan and App
In order to become fit, the participants have two possibilities: they can either train alone or in a group. A special training plan and an App have been developed by sport scientists on Halle's team for those who run alone. Both of these can be downloaded free of charge from the Internet. "Around 80 percent of the beginners start off too rapidly with too high of a burden and then quickly stop once again", diagnoses Halle. The training plan for beginners therefore includes a moderate increase in the movement, since "even ten to fifteen minutes of exercise can be a great strain on the cardiovascular system for those who are fully untrained", according to the professor of medicine.
Trainer seminar with Vice dean Prof. Halle
In addition, around 200 sport clubs in Bavaria are offering running meetings for Run10!. The trainers at these meetings have been prepared in a targeted manner by Halle in the course of a one-day Workshop held on March 21. Hereby, also current scientific knowledge on the topic of "movement" is covered. "The running meetings are ideal", claims Halle, "since, on the one hand, the participants get to know others and because of the additional motivation which develops through the group dynamics".
Studio guest in the "Abendschau"
On April 20, The Vice dean of the Faculty for Sport and Health Sciences was invited as a studio guest in the Abendschau of the Bavarian Broadcasting Network. During the ten-week training phase, Halle accompanies four runners for the BR show. Already in the preliminary stages these runners have undergone health check-ups. This is offered for beginners by the Faculty for Preventative and Rehabilitative Sport Medicine.
"A brief check-up by the family physician is generally advisable for beginners, especially if they are already over 45 years old. Those who have already suffered from serious illnesses should in all cases undergo a more detailed check-up", advises Halle. For self-assessment, the faculty offers a questionnaire to be downloaded.
Aside from the Chair for Preventative and Rehabilitative Sport Medicine, the BR cooperates with the Bavarian Sports Association as well as the Bavarian Athletics Association for Run10!. The final run is on July 3 in Wolnzach.
