"Studying sport helps in many ways," says Adam Sims. On Wednesday, May 17, the professional freestyle windsurfer will hold a guest lecture at the Faculty for Sport and Health Sciences.
In the course of the lecture on "Applied Biomechanics and Movement Science" by Dr. Florian Kreuzpointner, Sims spoke about his career as a professional windsurfer, about injuries, self-marketing, video analyses and the advantages of his scientific profile. Around 80 students participated in the event. Dr. Thomas Froschmeier had established the contact to Sims.
"By my studies, I obtained a very comprehensive view of sports. For instance, I know how to train myself correctly and have thereby developed a good feeling for my body", explains Sims. In addition, he has developed further competencies for instance in the field of marketing, which he makes use of for his self-marketing. His basic anatomical knowledge also helps him to understand injuries and what foreign doctors try to make clear.
Operation on the spinal column in Munich
Sims is very well acquainted with the topic of injuries. About one year ago, the Englishman had to be operated on after a serious fall on his spinal column. The treatment was performed in Munich. Following the strength-robbing rehabilitation, Sims can now, once again, participate in professional competition. In March, he was triumphant in Leucate (France) at the first Freestyle Contest of the European tour.
During the time of the injury, Sims developed a second mainstay as a surf-event filmer. "I always had a great passion for filming. The seminars on marketing and sport media now helped me to make it a profession," explains the professional surfer.
He recommended that the students complete their Bachelor's degree in any case. "The studies have already helped me several times afterwards - also even in aspects which I would not have anticipated in such a way beforehand," Sims exclaimed.
