Prof. Dr. Martin Lames has been confirmed in office as president of the International Association of Computer Science in Sport (IACSS). In the course of the "10th International Symposium on Computer Science in Sport", held in Loughborough, England, the members present elected Prof. Lames as their president already for the second time. Hereby, they also honored the professor for his successful work at the Department of Training Science and Sport Informatics over the past two years.
"My primary goal in the coming two years will certainly be the further expansion of the association," explains Lames. The combination of informatics and sport is a somewhat newer field in scientific research, whereby the IACSS is an important trailblazer.
Application of concepts from computer science in the sport sciences
"We argue, for example, that the computer should not only be employed as a measurement tool. Our aim is to take over and apply complete concepts from the computer sciences," says Lames. Neural networks, expert systems or even questions in machine learning, for example, should be used in the sport sciences.
"In this way, we hope to obtain control at a higher level, for instance in cases where pressing in soccer is further operationalized - or also involving the playability. Here, positional data can be evaluated," says the IACSS president. Further topics should also include performance diagnostics in sport games, applications of E-learning for sports as well as the transfer of experience by way of computer games that are related to sports.
TUM doctoral student Michael Stöckl as treasurer
Presently there are 14 national IACSS organizations, including, among others, those in Germany, England, China and India. In addition, an interest group with around 900 individuals exists in countries where there is still no national association. "We have grown quite extensively over the past few years. For example, there are now national offshoots in Brazil and Portugal, and probably also soon in Spain," as Lames summed up.
Dr. Michael Stöckl was elected as the IACSS treasurer. The academic staff member of the Department of Biomechanics, Kinesiology and Sport Informatics at the University of Vienna obtained his doctorate under Lames at the Department of Sport and Health Sciences.
The next IACSS conference will be taking place in 2017 in Brasilia, Brazil.
