The German Sports Science Association e.V. (DVS) has elected Prof. Yolanda Demetriou as vice president. As part of the 22nd Sports Science Education Conference, which took place from September 30 to October 2, 2015 at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, the present DVS members voted unanimously in favor of the professor of sports and health education.
"I am very pleased with this choice. This is a great honor and also a great opportunity for me to actively promote young talents and, at the same time, to gain a deeper insight into the structure of sports science", says Prof. Demetriou.
Vice-President for youth development
The DVS Executive Committee of Prof. Demetriou will represent in particular the field of "young talent". "My advantage here is certainly that I am still very close to the qualifying stage and can well understand the problems and needs of the target group", said the 32-year-old professor. Included in her agenda are such issues as the creation of higher-level guidelines for teacher ratios and publications as well as a stronger internationalization.
Organization of the DVS Summer Academy
In addition, the "Vice-President for youth development" is responsible for the organization of the DVS Summer Academy. Since the 80s, the DVS has organized a one-week summer seminar in a two-year cycle, with lectures by renowned experts. Eligible are ambitious young talents, in the postdoctoral phase or final phase of their doctoral studies, who aspire to a sports science college career. The participation is limited to 25 persons. In 2009, Demetriou herself even participated in the program. "I have benefited greatly from the presentations, the discussions and the network formed, and look forward to now providing these opportunities to additional sports scientists," summarizes Demetriou.
The next election for the Executive Committee will be held on September 13, 2017 at the 23rd Sports Science Education Conference in Munich. Organizer will then be the Department of Sport and Health Sciences at the Technical University of Munich.
With approximately 1,000 members, the DVS is the most prominent advocacy in the field of sports science in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The association publishes the magazine "Sport Science".
