Prof. Dr. Jürgen Beckmann has been invited to hold a symposium at the Congress of the European College of Sport Science (ECSS). The ECSS Congress is the most important interdisciplinary meetings in Europe on the topic of "Sport Sciences". From July 6th to 9th, around 2,700 scientists from 73 countries came to the Congress in Vienna. For his symposium, Prof. Beckmann chose the topic of "Psychological of Disorders in Elite Sport" and gave a lecture on this subject.
Topic: Personality Disorders in Sports
"There is little research on the topic of personality disorders in sports. That is very surprising since it must be assumed, particularly in sports, that one would be more likely to encounter certain extremes," explains the Professor of the Chair of Sports Psychology. "Here, for example, the characteristic of "perfectionism" is very pronounced in many elite athletes. At the same time, this was one of the factors that favors the development of a burnout," according to Beckmann.
Within the framework of the symposium, to which the habilitated psychologist as Chairman had developed the concept and invited international experts, the topic was illuminated in three twenty-minute presentations followed by a discussion. For this purpose, Beckmann invited two international experts, Prof. Howard Hall from the St. John University in York as well as Prof. Nicolas Lemyre from the Norwegian School of Sport Science in Oslo. Following the symposium, a representative of the renowned Routledge Publishers offered the three speakers to publish a book on this subject.
Invitation to a symposium at the ECSS 2017
In addition to the invitation to the symposium led by Prof. Beckmann in Vienna, one oral session on "Psychology, Burnout & Stress" and on "Psychological Sport Performance", as well as a mini-oral session with brief presentations on "Coaching & Talent Development" and a poster session on "Health & Fitness".
The next annual ECSS Congress will be held in 2017 in the metropolis of Ruhr in Essen. Prof. Beckmann is once again invited to attend the symposium. The topic in the coming year will be "Volition in Sport & Physical Activity" - a topic which has been a focus of Prof. Beckmann for many years.
