"I feel the renewed appointment to this prominent body as a personal honor and recognition of my previous jury activities. It shows that Interior Minister Herrmann must have been quite satisfied with my work over the past eight years," says a delighted Prof. Schaffrath.
In addition to the head of the Department of Media and Communications, the jury also includes Olympic champion Rosi Mittermaier-Neureuther, Dr. Florian Herrmann (Head of the Bavarian State Chancellery), Kasper Rorsted (Chairman of the Executive Board of adidas AG), Jörg Ammon (President of the Bavarian State Sports Association), Diana Stachowitz (Member of the Bavarian Parliament and President of the Bavarian Sports Association for the Disabled and Rehabilitation), Berthold Rüth (Member of the State Parliament and Chairman of the State Sports Advisory Council in the Bavarian State Parliament) as well as Thomas Hitzlsperger (DFB Ambassador for Diversity, former national soccer player) and Christoph Netzel (Head of Sports at Bayerischer Rundfunk). The jury sessions are chaired by Bavarian Interior Minister Herrmann, who is also responsible for sports in Bavaria. Prof. Schaffrath has already been working as part of the jury since 2012.
In 2020, the honoring ceremonies were marked by restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Soccer legend Bastian Schweinsteiger, triathlete Anne Haug, para-swimmer Josia Topf, rower Oliver Zeidler, the "kicker" sports magazine, snowboarder Ramona Hofmeister and FC Bayern München were honored with the Bavarian Sports Award in various categories last year. In addition, FC Bayern President Uli Hoeneß, basketball world star Dirk Nowitzki and Olympic biathlon champion Magdalena Neuner have also received awards in the past.
