"For us as a department, it is of course great to be a partner of the European Championships 2022," says Dr. Till Lorenzen, Managing Director of the Department SG. "Our new halls and premises, as well as the new sports facilities at the TUM Campus in the Olympic Park, will be very prestigious once completed and of course extremely attractive as a training venue for such an event. In particular, we are looking forward to the meetings with Europe's best athletes, who will experience short distances due to the close proximity within the Olympic Park."
In addition to the new athletics stadium, the so-called throwing field and a total of eight beach volleyball courts, the new quadruple hall, the triple hall, the school gymnasium, the apparatus gymnasium and various diagnostic and seminar rooms as well as lecture halls will also be used as part of the European Championships 2022.
"The athletes will find the very best conditions with us," assures Michael Hahn, head of Central University Sports Munich. "We hope, of course, that they will feel comfortable with us on the facilities and that we can thus help them deliver top performances."
Such a major international event requires a lot of staff. That's why applications for the volunteer program for the European Championships 2022 started on May 1. Registration will run until August 31, 2021. A total of around 6,000 volunteers are being sought, who, among other things, will greet guests with a smile, catch interviews in the mixed zone, coordinate the supporting program, or help with setups in the sports facilities. They will help to ensure that everything runs smoothly both in front of and behind the scenes and set the stage for a spectacular event.
Interested parties can register at munich2022.com/volunteers and become part of a unique community. The basic requirement is to be 18 years old by the deadline of June 1, 2022, and to have a knowledge of German and/or English.
There are 16 areas of assignment to choose from, which require and promote a wide variety of skills. Many of the positions can also be performed by people with disabilities. The assignment times are flexible and range from a few days to several weeks. All volunteers enjoy a wide range of benefits as part of their assignment, including access to the competitions, official event clothing, tickets for local public transport and a volunteer certificate.
Marion Schöne, Managing Director of Olympiapark München GmbH, is pleased about the lively interest: "With the start of the volunteer program, another milestone has been reached on the way to Munich 2022. Together with many volunteers, we will put on a sports event that inspires, sets new standards and leaves a lasting legacy. The European Championships Munich 2022 will be the highlight of the Olympic Park's 50th anniversary year and all volunteers are an important part of it. In addition to the professional look behind the scenes, participation in the volunteer program is above all a valuable personal experience. Here, team spirit is paramount, international contacts are made and friendships are forged that could last a lifetime. We are therefore looking forward to numerous registrations."
