"Annually, 18 million people suffer from cancer worldwide. Nine million of them will die. By 2020, it should even be 20 million people who get sick annually," says Dr. Thorsten Schulz. Together with the journalist Petra Thaller, Dr. Schulz was a guest of the North German Broadcasting Network in their TV talk show "DAS!" held on Saturday, December 1, 2018. On the so-called "Red Sofa", the scientific staff member of the Chair of Preventive Pediatrics under the Dean, Prof. Dr. Renate Oberhoffer, and the journalist spoke together with the host Inka Schneider about the significance of sport and movement in the therapy of cancer.
Initiative of "Outdoors against Cancer"
In January 2015, Thaller was diagnosed with a "cancer of the breast". After an operation and chemotherapy she now dedicates herself to the fight against this illness. The journalist created the initiative "Outdoor against Cancer" (OaC). Go outside and move, partake in nature as a therapy - that is the idea which, in the meantime, has become a true movement. OaC is accompanied by the sport scientist Dr. Schulz, who has performed research on the positive effects of physical activity on disease progression for more than twenty years.
Book on sport and cancer
"Sport or movement strengthens the immune system, strengthens the figure and strengthens the physique as well as the psyche," explains Schulz. "Sport is a great partial aspect and a very good supplement to classical medicine in an attempt to improve the patients' situation. Not only during the therapy, but also afterward." Concrete sport recommendations are provided by Schulz and Thaller in their book "Outdoor against Cancer: How movement and sport in nature function in the fight against cancer", which they published in August with the Kailash publishers.
The TV program "THAT" is a daily talk show of the NDR. Between 6:45 and 7:30 p.m., guests take their seats on the "Red Sofa". During this year, for example, the star violinist David Garrett, the politician Gregor Gysi, the actor Hannes Jaennicke and the businessman Dirk Rossmann were guests on the talk show.
