The Bavarian Culture Award has been presented since 2005 by the regional network operator "Bayernwerk" in cooperation with the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts for outstanding achievements in the arts and sciences. This year, Dr. Barbara Reiner, Research Associate at the Chair of Preventive Pediatrics, receives the Bavarian Culture Award in the "Universities" category.
Bavarian artists are honored for their significant artistic work as well as graduates and doctoral students of Bavarian universities, universities of applied sciences and state art colleges. The Bavarian Culture Award is intended to provide an impulse for the preservation of cultural diversity and at the same time to create a stage for art and science in the Bavarian regions.
In the category "Universities", the best doctoral theses at Bavarian universities are awarded. One doctoral student per university receives the Bavarian Culture Award, regardless of department or discipline. The award comes with prize money of 2,000 euros.
This year, the Technical University of Munich chose Dr. Barbara Reiner, a Research Associate at the Chair of Preventive Pediatrics, who, as part of her dissertation "Preventive Screening of Children and Adolescents with Congenital Heart Defects," examined the quality of life, sports motor skills and cardiovascular health of more than 500 girls and boys aged seven to 17 with heart disease. In the examination of sports motor skills in particular, the children with heart disease - in each case depending on the severity of the heart defect - performed worse than healthy people, as they did in the examination of arterial vascular health. From this, the award winner concluded that children and adolescents with heart disease should be screened early for abnormal vascular changes for healthy aging.
"Being honored as one of 32 university and college graduates in Bavaria is of course a special recognition for me as a scientist," said Dr. Reiner, delighted about the award. "I am of course very happy that the jury selected my dissertation as representative of all doctoral theses at the Technical University of Munich."
"For us as the Department of Sport and Health Sciences and especially for the Chair of Preventive Pediatrics, this is excellent news that Dr. Reiner's work has now been honored and recognized to this extent," said Prof. Dr. Renate Oberhoffer-Fritz, Dean of the Department of Sport and Health Sciences and head of the Chair of Preventive Pediatrics.
