"Perspectives on Positive Leadership" - this is the title of the 4th International High Performance Leadership Forum to be held in Raitenhaslach from October 9-11, 2023. It is being organized by Prof. Dr. Dr. Jürgen Beckmann, Chair Emeritus of Sport Psychology and member of the TUM Emeriti of Excellence, together with the University of Queensland/Australia and the University of Edinburgh/Scotland.
"We organized this event for the first time in 2016. At that time, it was mainly managers and coaches from the Australian Football League who attended," explains Prof. Beckmann. "Our primary interest has always been to transfer psychological insights and topics from business to sports. After the forum has always been strongly dominated by participants from the sports sector in the past, this time the business sector will be more in the foreground."
The forum will bring together an international group of leaders from business, high-performance sports and renowned academics. Participants will include psychologists, coaches and managers. An illustrious program has been put together with various presentations by experts who will address perspectives on positive leadership.
The three-day program will focus on elements of modern leadership that are central to positive psychology. Positive leadership is a leadership style that emphasizes positive relationships, positive communication, and positive workplace climate. It is a people-centered approach that focuses on building appreciative relationships, fostering personal development, and making work meaningful. Fundamental elements are trust, personal responsibility (self-determination) and sense of meaning.
Different forms of leadership can promote high performance in different areas and prevent performance degradation, such as team breakdown. These include communication, fostering personal development, and supporting health and well-being, especially including a balanced recovery-stress balance. The lectures will present practical examples of successful implementation of positive leadership.
After two introductory lectures on the first day of the event by Prof. Beckmann ("Trust, Ownership, and Meaning") and Prof. Cliff Mallett from the University of Queensland ("Serial Winning Coaches' Leadership: Caring Determination"), Dr. Max Pelka, former team psychologist at FC Bayern Munich, will speak on the topic of "Challenges in sport psychological counseling of a world class football team". In addition, Dr. Christopher Mächel, consultant at Metaplan, will provide insights into "Systematic leadership perspectives."
"As in sports, the aim of the event is to pass the balls to each other and to think outside the box together," summarizes Prof. Beckmann.
