Children and young people in Bavaria sit too much and move too little. That's the result of the Physical Activity Report Card 2022. In the category "Physical fitness and physical activity", the score was only 4. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends one hour of physical activity per day. However, only one third of children and young people achieve this goal.
The Physical Activity Report Card 2022 was also a topic of discussion in various media, such as SAT.1's news program "17:30 Sat.1 Bayern" and the program "Abendschau" at Bayerischer Rundfunk. Study leader Prof. Dr. Yolanda Demetriou, head of the Assistant Professorship of Educational Science in Sport and Health, classified the results of the study in the TV reports.
"If children are inactive, there is a very high probability that they will also become inactive adults. This of course has a reinforcing influence on chronic disease such as cardiovascular disease, obesity or diabetes," said Prof. Demetriou in an interview with "17:30 Sat.1 Bayern."
The sports scientist therefore recommends a change in the way children get to school: "A first measure would be that we no longer have the parent cabs, but that the children are encouraged to cycle to school and not immediately panic when it drizzles a little. That simply has to become culture, as it is in Scandinavian countries."
The "Abendschau" of the Bayerischer Rundfunk also reported on the Physical Activity Report Card 2022 in its program on October 24 and interviewed Prof. Demetriou on the subject.
"At the moment it is just so in Germany that we have many possibilities to sit. And the opportunities for movement, for physical activity, are becoming fewer and fewer," Prof. Yolanda Demetriou said in the report at BR. "It's easy and comfortable to take the SUV and use it to get from A to B. We're not very active. We have few role models to show us that even if it's raining, we can ride our bikes to school."
