Our PhD student Daniela Schranner returned in December from her three-month research visit in the lab of Robert Gerszten at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. The research group at Harvard focusses on clinical biomarkers related to cardiovascular diseases and diabetes by measuring metabolites and proteins in the blood of large patient cohorts. Next to clinical biomarkers, the group of Dr. Gerszten also investigates biomarkers of cardiorespiratory health and their change with exercise training. During her stay, Daniela was part of a study that looks at protein changes after long-term exercise training and their relation to health outcomes. In our group at TUM, Daniela investigates metabolite and protein profiles in highly trained athletes, which is why the visit in Boston fitted very well into her PhD project.
