In her academic work, Kathrin Schmidt concentrates on aspects of impairment, disability and participation, especially from an international and comparative perspective. She is also interested in socio-cultural aspects of disability, with regard to the construction of normality and difference, as well as in concrete approaches to inclusive development. In this context, Kathrin Schmidt mainly focuses on the strategy of Community-Based Rehabilitation (WHO), a resource-oriented strategy that fosters inclusive development. This approach currently forms the basis of a cooperation project with Pwani University in Kenya and will flow into the design of a new curriculum.
Kathrin Schmidt studied Rehabilitation Pedagogy at the Technische Universität Dortmund (MA equiv.) with an emphasis on work and social rehabilitation.
