Professor Wacker’s (*1954) research focuses on coping with social inequality, diversity and difference when faced with impairment and disability in society (ICF, WHO, cross-cultural comparison). Other topics include the transformation of care systems (prevention, rehabilitation) and social policy (inclusion, participation and disability mainstreaming). She also examines the interdependency of social and context factors (linked to conditions and quality of life) within the human lifespan and with regard to adequate indicators.
Professor Wacker studied theology, philosophy and sociology (among others) at the Universität Tübingen, where she obtained her PhD in Social Sciences. After developing and managing the "Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on the Lifeworlds [Lebenswelten] of Persons with Disability", a Central Scientific Institute of the Eberhard-Karls Universität Tübingen, she was appointed Full Professor at the Chair for Sociology of Rehabilitation at the Universität Dortmund in 1996. She was a Visiting Professor in Vienna (Austria) from 2008 to 2009 and in Pingtung and Taipei (Taiwan) in 2011. She has been a Full Professor at the Chair for Sociology of Diversity since January 2013.
Professor Wacker was appointed Max Planck Fellow in 2010: she has been managing the “Transformation of social support systems; participation and disability; structures, measures and effects of prevention, rehabilitation and health development in a national and international perspective” research group (2010-2015) and will be heading the follow-up programme "Dis[cover]ability & Indicators for Inclusion" (2015-20120) at the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy in Munich.
Furthermore, since 2011, she has been the Chairperson of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Federal Government’s report on the conditions of life of persons with disabilities [Bundesteilhabebericht]. Over the years, she has garnered a wealth of experience in academic leadership positions and expert committees.
