Making SDM a Reality

In coorperation with the University Medical Centers Schleswig Holstein (UKSH), the University Hospital of North Norway, the TAKEPART Media + Science GmbH and the German statutory health insurance Techniker Krankenkasse, the chair of health economics of the TUM is involved as the evaluating institution in the project “Making SDM a Reality – Implementation of Shared Decision Making at Hospitals”. The project has a term of four years (2017-2021).

“Shared Decision Making” describes the participation of the patient in the decision-making process of the medical treatment. Its aim is to ensure that evidence-based information as well as the individual preferences of the patient are getting considered in the decisions for the further treatment. To realize this involvement of the patient, the project provides an implementation strategy in the participating hospitals that consists of five modules (training for doctors, qualification of the nursing staff, patient education, online courses for healthcare professions and evidence-based decision-making aids).

The evaluation of the health consequences, the arising additional costs and the perceived participation of the patient in the decision-making process will be realized with questionnaires, video-based analyses and the routine data of health insurances.

The main contacts for this project are Tobias Bock and Saskia Kropp.
