  • Conference "Redesigning Care Together - Lessons Learned and Experiences of Social Space-Oriented Cooperation for Health Promotion and Health Care

At the end of the research project "b4: Identifying needs | Building bridges. Participatory observation, evaluation and reporting of new approaches to community Health Promotion and Disease Care", the results of collaborative planning and design will be considered in the interaction of maximum care providers and community commitment to health care. The concerns and worries of those involved should be addressed in the necessary breadth: i.e., the care providers as well as the citizens, the specialist staff in both outpatient and inpatient care, the latest professional and technical knowledge as well as the interfaces to the living environments of the population and the mandates of municipal and maximum health care.


  • Conference "Transforming residential vacancy - through participation. New ways of use and development of the living space in communities".

At completion of the research project "WohL - Worthy places from un-used spaces! [Wohnungsleerstand wandeln!] Participatory development of new concepts for re-purposing vacant or seldom-used housing in the Dachau district", results of the research project implemented jointly with the communities of the district of Dachau will be presented.

Possible transferable findings of community and district development in Bavaria will be presented for discussion. In particular, issues of research and implementation methods, feasibility and future effectiveness will be addressed between academia, application and political future planning and design.


  • International Conference "13th European Congress of Mental Health in Intellectual Disability", Berlin, Venue Urania, 23 – 25 September 2021

Prof. Wacker gives a short lecture on the participation reporting by the Federal Government during the opening event of the international conference (23 September 2021). 

  • International Conference "1st International and Interdisciplinary Conference on Spatial Methods and 1st RC33 Regional Conference", Botswana, 23 - 26 September 2021.  

Ulrike Fettke, Mona Bergmann and Prof. Wacker participate in the conference in Botswana with their presentation "Beyond community representation by including vulnerable groups in housing research". 

  • Conference "The institutional space production of the urban. Final conference of the DFG-funded project The construction of spaces in the context of security - spatial knowledge for the police (KORSIT)", Münster, 20 - 21 October 2021 

Ulrike Fettke, Mona Bergmann and Prof. Wacker participate in the conference in Münster with their presentation "Reduction of residential exclusion through vacancy change. Exploration and participatory determination of measures in the Munich metropolitan region". 

  • Conference: "Housing and Living in Health with Impairment and Disability".

To conclude the nationwide research project "WoGe2020 - The Corona Pandemic in Special Living Arrangements for People with Disabilities. Snapshots and Future Planning on Equality and Participation in Health Care in 2020", a meeting for academics and practitioners is planned, which will present the research results on the topic of "Accommodation and Housing in Health with Impairment and Disability" for discussion.

The meeting location and execution will be adjusted due to the pandemic.

The research project is supported by funds of the BMAS.

  • Conference: Right to Health. Prevention and health care in offers of the integration assistance, von Bodelschwinghsche Stiftungen Bethel, Bielefeld

Together with the von Bodelschwinghschen Stiftungen, Bethel, a conference will take place on September 16, 2021 in Bielefeld, in which the results of the study Präge commissioned by the BMG and with the Bundes-AOK will be presented and discussed under the title: Prevention and health care in integration assistance. What you know, what you should know!

  • In preparation

After a pandemic hiatus, planning is resuming with partner universities for a Summer School on One Health and the Role of Water (WASH). The aim is to highlight the crucial role of water for the health of humans, animals and the planet.

In 2015 the governments of the UN agreed on 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to guide all countries as they aim to end extreme poverty, reduce inequalities and tackle climate change globally by 2030. Goal 6 aims to ensure everyone has sustainably managed safe water and sanitation.

Funding is provided by the VW Foundation.


  • Workshop: "Enabling Diversity - Reducing Inequality - Ensuring Sustainability: Challenges and Approaches in Science and Governance", Ringberg Castle, Kreuth, Germany

Under the title "Diversity as a Structural Feature of Modern Societies"

the biannual team workshop of the Chair of Diversity Sociology took place at Ringberg Castle in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy from January 22 to 24, 2020.


  • International and interdisciplinary conference "One Health", Pwani University, Kilifi, Kenya.

A symposium on Animal Health, Human Health, Healthy Environment "One Health" organized jointly with Pwani University was held from December 17-19, 2018. It brought together researchers from different African and European countries. Funding was provided by the DAAD.

  • Diversity Network Conference "Diversity Research: From Reconstruction to Disruption" D-A-CH, Munich.

The Diversity Network Conference took place from September 12-14, 2018, at the Technical University of Munich under the motto "Diversity Research: From Reconstruction to Disruption." The conference and network meeting of German-speaking diversity researchers serves the inter- and transdisciplinary exchange of science and practice and invites all interested parties to submit contributions.

  • Workshop: "Diversity in Science: Foundations, Research and Implementation" in Innsbruck, Austria.

Under the title "Diversity in Science: Foundations, Research and Implementation" the biannual team workshop of the Chair of Sociology of Diversity took place from July 16-17, 2018 in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy, this time enriched by presentations of researchers from the University of Innsbruck. At the University of Innsbruck, social inequality was examined and discussed from a wide range of scientific disciplines.


  • Workshop "Participation and Governance" in Bolzano, Italy

Under the title "Participation and Governance - Challenges and New Approaches in Policy, Law and Practice", the biannual team workshop of the Chair of Sociology of Diversity took place in Bolzano, Italy, from September 25-27, 2017, this time enriched by presentations from the Eurac Institute for Comparative Fostering Research. In two days full of content, a wide range of topics around (political) participation, social inequality or diversity, as well as governance and health were discussed and examined from different disciplinary perspectives.


  • International conference: (Dis)ability and the Global 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development - Can Community-Based Rehabilitation Serve as a Guideline for Inclusive Sustainable Development? Kilifi, Kenya

Pwani University (Kenya) and the Chair of Sociology of Diversity at TUM hosted the final conference of the joint project "CBResearch" from November 28-30, 2016 on the campus of Pwani University in Kilifi (Kenya). The international conference brought together scholars and practitioners and provided a forum for interdisciplinary exchange on the topic of 'inclusive and sustainable development'.

The project "CBResearch" was supported by the DAAD and funded by the BMZ.

  • Workshop "Diversity and Diversity in Research" in Graz, Austria

Under the title "Diversity and Diversity in Research", the biannual team workshop of the Chair of Sociology of Diversity together with the Fellow Group from the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy took place in Graz, Austria, from October 17-19, 2016, with contributions from experts from the University of Graz.

  • First South-East African and European Conference on Refugees and Forced Migrants: Social Rights - Care - Mutual Benefits?" Kilifi, Kenya

On August 2-3, 2016, the 1st South-East African and European Con-ference on Refugees and Forced Migrants: Social Rights - Care - Mutual Benefits? took place in Kilifi, Kenya. The conference was a joint project of the Fellow Group 'Dis[cover]ability and Indica-tors for Inclusion' headed by Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Wacker and the Department of Social Law of Director Prof. Dr. Ulrich Becker, LL.M. (EHI), in cooperation with the Chair of Sociology of Diversity at the Technical University of Munich and Pwani University in Kenya. The aim of the conference was to complement the often purely Eurocentric discourse on the topic of refugees with African perspectives and to promote the networking of research activities and the exchange of best practices. To this end, researchers from Africa and Europe were invited to examine the topic in an interdisciplinary manner from historical, legal, political and cultural perspectives and to enter into intensive dialogue with each other through the workshop format of the conference. High-ranking representatives of Pwani University and the local administration attended the conference and emphasized the need for international comparative research on (forced) migration.

The conference proceedings have been published in Wacker, Elisabeth, Becker, Ulrich, Crepaz, Katharina (Eds.) (2019). Refugees and Forced Migrants in Africa and the EU. Comparative and Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Challenges and Solutions. Wiesbaden: Springer VS.


  • Workshop "Diversity as a Challenge for Science and Practice" in Florence, Italy

Under the heading "Diversity as a Challenge for Science and Practice", the biannual team workshop of the Chair of Diversity Sociology together with the Fellow Group from the Max Planck Institute for Social Law and Social Policy took place in Florence from August 26-28, 2015.
